Previous limits on egg consumption has been lifted as recent research shows that the cholesterol contained in eggs does not have any significant affect on our body’s blood cholesterol (according to the BEIS). This means that you can enjoy as many eggs as you like without it having any adverse affect on your blood cholesterol level. Findings show that it is actually saturated fat which causes an adverse affect on blood cholesterol levels.
It can be reasonably common to find two yolks in one egg and we often try to select them out (using a candling machine) and sell them separately as they are so highly prized.
Double yolks normally come from young hens that are just coming into lay. When the hens first come into lay their ovaries are not fully developed and due to a hormone imbalance, they have several yolk follicles maturing at the same time which will release several yolks into the egg laying channel then enclosing them in the egg albumen and shell. This is normally corrected within a couple of weeks however when their egg laying system settles down
All our hens are fed a cereal based vegetarian diet made up of the highest quality materials which include;
65% Wheat
15% Soya
5% Sunflower
9% Limestone
2% Wheat Feed
2% Fats and Oils
2% Mineral Supplement
All of our farms are of course approved by both the Lion standard and the Freedom Food standard. However, what we felt these standards lacked a grading structure for farms. The audits will either pass or fail farms but they do not identify any exceptional ones. To overcome this problem, we devised our own 10 point internal audit which includes both farm standards and animal welfare questions. These points are marked on a scale that we devised and we have a dedicated field team who carry out the audits and are specially trained to ensure that their auditing standards are uniform. Dependant on how the farms score on these audits, they will be graded bronze, silver, gold or platinum. Only our very best farms in the gold and platinum grades will be chosen to become happy egg farms.
Here at the happy egg co., the welfare of our hens is at the forefront of all our operations as we demonstrate in our TV advertising and on our website. We have special happy egg farms with farmers dedicated to looking after all their girls and ensuring they are indeed kept happy……we believe a happy hens deliciously tasty eggs!
To help ensure a happy life for all our hens, the farms not only have wide open spaces where the hens are free to roam they also have trees to play, sandpits to scratch around in and towers ideal for perching pleasure. All the images on our site are of our happy hens behaving naturally in their beautiful surroundings.
To make sure the high standards we set for our happy egg farms are maintained, a team of specialist, experienced Fieldsmen visits each and every farm on a regular basis and helps the farmers with any questions they may have.
The colour of a yolk is due pigmenting carotenoids. These pigments can be naturally occurring in certain feed ingredients or synthetic. The happy egg co. has a policy of only using naturally occurring pigments such as marigold, grass or prairie meal.
All feed is produced according to the Agricultural Industry Confederation’s UFAS (Universal Feed Assurance) code.
A wider variation in colour can be expected in the yolks from happy egg as they are fed a natural diet and are free to roam outdoors gaining additional carotenoids from eating vegetation on the range.
The Nutritional value of the egg is not affected by the yolk colour.
During the day our girls are free to roam the range where they have trees to play amongst, sandpits to scratch around in and towers ideal for perching pleasure. At night time when the sun begins to go down and the temperature drops slightly our girls make their way to their hen house where they are tucked away for the night by our farmers. As soon as the sun begins to appear the next day the girls are let out back onto the range again.
