Children love to bake, and enjoy decorating even more! This recipe for traditional fairy cakes is easy to make, quick to cook, and a nice flat surface area to decorate with lots of messy icing.

Ingredients

For the icing

  • 200g 7⅛ oz Unrefined golden icing sugar (we like Billington's) Unrefined golden icing sugar
  • 50g 1⅞ oz Butter (unsalted)
  • Food colouring

The Method Enter Bake mode

  1. Classic mode Step 1

    Preheat the oven to 180°C (170°C fan, gas mark 5). Line a cupcake tin with cake cases, if you have no cake cases, grease and flour the individual holes.

  2. Classic mode Step 2

    Beat together the butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth.

    Sift the flour into the bowl with the baking powder. Stir in until well blended. Spoon the mix into the cake cases, if using.

    Bake for 12-15 minutes until a skewer comes out clean when inserted. Cool on a rack before decorating.

  5. Classic mode Step 5

    To make the icing, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy and pale, add a drop of milk if needed. Add the colouring as required and spoon or spread onto the fairy cakes with a palette knife.
