Give your Christmas dinner table a touch of character this year with these personalised gingerbread place settings. These biscuits are a novel and fun idea, plus a great after-dinner snack (if you are not too full from all of the turkey!)

Ingredients

  • 350g 12½ oz Plain white flour (we use Allinson) Plain white flour
  • 1tsp 1tsp Ginger (ground)
  • 1tsp 1tsp Bicarbonate of soda
  • 100g 3½ oz Butter (unsalted) cubed, cold
  • 150g 5⅜ oz Unrefined light muscovado sugar (we use Billington's) Unrefined light muscovado sugar
  • 1 1 Egg(s) (free range) large
  • 4tbsp 4tbsp Golden syrup (we use Silver Spoon)

For the decoration

  • Red sugar paste icing
  • White sugar paste icing
  • Writing icing

The Method Enter Bake mode

  1. Classic mode Step 1

    Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan 160°C, gas mark 4). Line a couple of baking trays with greaseproof paper.

  2. Classic mode Step 2

    Sieve the flour, ginger and bicarbonate of soda into a large bowl. Using your fingertips rub in the butter until you get a fine breadcrumb texture, then add the sugar and stir in.

  3. Classic mode Step 3

    Whisk the beaten egg and the golden syrup and add to the bowl. Mix to form a dough.

    • 4tbsp 4tbsp Golden syrup (we use Silver Spoon)
  4. Classic mode Step 4

    Lightly flour your work surface then roll out the dough to a thickness of 3-4mm. Cut out the shapes using a gingerbread cutter and lay each one out onto the baking trays.

    Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes until golden brown.

    Once baked, leave to cool on a wire rack.

    Roll out the red sugar paste icing and use the gingerbread cutters to stamp out the shape of the dress. Then use a knife to trim the shape.

    Use the writing icing to pipe the facial features and personalise with your guests name.
