Why not make your own tree decorations this year – a great activity for the whole family to get involved in. These delicious gingerbread biscuits are really simple to make and can be personalised for each member of the family or given as gifts. Don’t forget to make a hole in the top of your gingerbread decoration to fit the pretty ribbon through so that you can hang them up.

Ingredients

For the biscuit

  • 125g 4½ oz Butter (unsalted)
  • 150g 5⅜ oz Unrefined dark muscovado sugar (we use Billington's) Unrefined dark muscovado sugar
  • 4tbsp 4tbsp Golden syrup (we use Silver Spoon)
  • 300g 10⅝ oz Plain white flour (we use Allinson) Plain white flour
  • 1tsp 1tsp Bicarbonate of soda
  • 2tsp 2tsp Ginger (ground)

For the decoration

  • 250g 8⅞ oz Royal icing sugar (we use Silver Spoon)
  • Food colouring assortment of colours

The Method Enter Bake mode

  1. Classic mode Step 1

    Preheat the oven to 170°C (150°C fan,  gas mark 4).  Grease and flour a baking sheet.

  2. Classic mode Step 2

    Melt together the butter, sugar and syrup. Sift together the flour, bicarbonate of soda and ground ginger.  Mix the melted butter mixture into the flour until the dough comes together.

    • 2tsp 2tsp Ginger (ground)
  3. Classic mode Step 3

    On a floured surface roll out the dough to 5mm thick.  Using a floured cutter, cut out your preferred shapes and transfer to the prepared baking sheet on a palette knife or similar.

  4. Classic mode Step 4

    Bake for 12 minutes until cooked through.  Have ready a skewer or cocktail stick.  As soon as the biscuits are out of the oven and they are still soft, use the skewer to make a hole for the ribbon to go through.  Cool on a rack.

  5. Classic mode Step 5

    Make up the royal icing, following the instructions on pack and adding water. Add a few drops of food colouring to your icing until you reach the desired colour.
