Onion Tart Ingredients

6 Filo Pastry Sheets, (30cm x 20cm/12 x 8in)
1 Happy Eggs Whites, beaten Happy Eggs
900 grams Red Onions, sliced
2 tsp Half Spoon Granulated Sugar (Silver Spoon) Half Spoon Granulated Sugar (Silver Spoon)
2 Cloves Garlic crushed
2 Free Range Eggs Free Range Eggs
2 tbsp Fresh Thyme
1 tbsp Soy Sauce
110 grams Cheddar Cheese, low fat
Salt & Ground Black Pepper

How to make Onion Tart

  1. Preheat oven to 190°C, 375° F, Gas Mark 5. method tip
  2. Stack the filo pastry sheets on top of each other.
  3. Using scissors cut the stack into 6 equal square sections, so that you end up with 36 individual squares.
  4. Take 6 non-stick individual tartlet tins 10cm (4inches) diameter. In each tin, place 6 individual pastry squares in layers, placing the squares at slight angles to each other with beaten egg white in between each layer.
  5. Bake in the oven for 5 minutes until dry. Allow to cool.
  6. Make the filling. Preheat a non-stick frying pan until hot.
  7. Add the onions and garlic with the half spoon sugar and dry fry for 4-5 minutes until they start to caramelise and turn brown.
  8. In a mixing bowl beat the eggs; add the thyme, soy sauce and cheese. Quickly mix in the onions and the chopped chives seasoning with salt and black pepper.
  9. Spoon into the pastry cases and bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes until set.
  10. Serve warm with a mixed leaf salad.
