Mince pie tips

Mince pie tips

Its best to use shortcrust pastry when making mince pies. if you want a flaky topping use puff pastry for the lids only.

Why not try adding finely grated orange zest to your dessert pastry or shortcrust for a citrus change

Home made mincemeat is delicious and we have some great recipes on bakingmad, but if you are pushed for time, buy a jar and add a few extra ingredients to make it taste home made! add a little chopped apple, dried cranberries or  dried , chopped, apricots, a few choped pecan nuts or even a few chopped segments of clementines, add  a slug of brandy or Cointreau too if liked

Top your mince pies with pastry stars or a lattice of pastry strips, or add a marzipan star instead of pastry. You can also top your mince pies with a little crumble mixture, or some flaked almonds, and dust with icing sugar or drizzle with a little glacé icing.

To make your mince pies really crisp and golden, brush the pastry tops with a tiny bit of beaten egg white and sprinkle with caster sugar before baking.
