This shortbread mixture is so delicious, just roll and cut out any shape you like, or roll into a log shape, chill then slice into rounds and bake until crisp and golden. These biscuits will keep for a week in a cake tin.

  3. Classic mode Step 3

Turn out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead lightly into a ball. Wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.

  4. Classic mode Step 4

Roll the mixture out on a lightly floured work surface, then using cutters cut out your letters or words. To make the jam hearts, cut out two equal sized hearts, then use a smaller cutter to cut a small heart out of the centre of one of them and fill with jam.

  5. Classic mode Step 5

Bake for 10-15 minutes depending on size and thickness, or until just pale golden. Allow to cool for 10 minutes on the baking trays, then cool completely on a wire rack. Dust with icing sugar or ice with royal icing.
