A simple yet silky smooth homemade vanilla custard can be served warm or chilled and is the perfect accompaniment to any dessert.

Flavoured with delicious Nielsen-Massey vanilla bean paste, the little flecks of vanilla give this custard a luxurious look and taste.

This easy custard only takes 10 minutes to make and is sure to become a regular in your baking repertoire – who can resist real homemade custard? Not us!

  • 275ml 9⅜ fl oz Double cream
  • 1tbsp 1tbsp Vanilla bean paste (we use Nielsen-Massey) Vanilla bean paste
  • 10g ½ oz Unrefined golden caster sugar (we use Billington's) Unrefined golden caster sugar
  • 3 3 Egg yolk(s) (free range)
  • 1tsp 1tsp Cornflour

The Method Enter Bake mode

  1. Classic mode Step 1

    Heat the cream in a saucepan over a medium heat until it reaches boiling point.

    • 275ml 9⅜ fl oz Double cream
  2. Classic mode Step 2

    In a separate bowl, beat together the caster sugar, vanilla bean paste, egg yolks and cornflour until light and fluffy.

    Carefully pour half of the warmed cream in with the egg mixture and blend together.

  4. Classic mode Step 4

    Add the egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining cream and heat gently for 1-2 minutes, continuously stirring until the custard begins to thicken.

  5. Classic mode Step 5

    Once thickened, serve the custard immediately or allow to cool and chill in the fridge,  if serving the custard cold.
