Whether it is your child's first footprint or handprint, your pets pawprint or even an imprint of the key to your first house the possibilities are endless.

If you poke a hole into the top of the salt dough before baking you can thread through a ribbon once set to make a beautiful tree decoration.

Follow our step-by-step guide below for how to make salt dough ornaments.

Method

  1. Step 1:

For this recipe you will require 1 cup of salt, 1 cup of flour and ½ cup of water.

  2. Step 2:

Mix the ingredients together until it begins to form a dough. This is a fun task for your little bakers to get involved with.

  3. Step 3:

Knead the dough for 15 minutes. You may need to sprinkle additional flour on the surface to prevent any sticking.

  4. Step 4:

Gently roll the dough out to approximately ¼ inch in thickness.

  5. Step 5:

Using a circular cutter stamp out 4 circles from the dough. Make sure that the circles are large enough to fit in the hand or footprint. Using a straw, punch one or two holes in the top of the ornament if you are looking to hang this on your Christmas tree. It's important to do this before baking.

  6. Step 6:

Place the salt dough on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper and the firmly push down the hand, foot, key etc. to leave an imprint. Bake the salt dough in a preheat oven at 150°c / Gas Mark 2 for approximately 3 hours or until they are completely dry.
