This Irish soda bread recipe is easy to follow and tastes delicious.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200C (fan 180C, gas mark 6) and line a baking sheet.

  2. Mix all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl, rubbing in the molasses sugar to separate the crystals.

  3. Make a well in the centre, add the buttermilk and bring together with clean hands into a wet sticky dough.

  4. Knead the dough very lightly and form into a round and place on the lined baking sheet.

  5. Using a sharp knife, slash the bread in a cross shape that reaches from edge to edge, about 1.5cm deep.

  6. Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

  7. Cool on a wire rack with a clean damp cloth placed over the top. Eat warm or cold.
