This is a really quick and easy bread to make. There is no kneading or proving required. This soda bread tastes great just buttered and eaten alone.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan, gas mark 6). Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and cream of tartar into a large bowl, then stir in the salt.

  2. Lightly rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

  3. Make a well in the centre and gradually add the buttermilk and enough of the water to form a soft dough

  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead lightly, then shape into a 20cm round. Place on a baking sheet and, using a sharp knife, mark a deep cross on the top.

  5. Bake the loaf for 30 minutes or until risen and golden brown. Cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or cold.

Very easy to make. I doubled up on the butter. Took 40 minutes at 160C fan assisted oven.

So easy to make. I’ve sliced my loaf and put some in the freezer too! Perfect recipe if you’re out of yeast.
