Every cupcake needs a delicious topping and this is a great way to perfect yours. This basic buttercream recipe is sure to give you perfect results every time.  

5Prep Time


  1. Step 1:

    Beat the butter and sugar together until smooth, before adding the vanilla extract. Adding a splash of milk, if preferred will help soften and make a soft smooth consistency.

  2. Step 2:

    To create a coloured buttercream, add a few drops of food colouring at a time, mixing until your reach the desired colour.


    • 50g Unsalted butter (softened)
    • 200g Silver Spoon Icing Sugar
    • 1 tsp Nielsen-Massey Vanilla Extract
    • A few drops Food colouring
